The pool and splash park will be closed Monday, May 21 for cleaning.

On Saturday, April 14, Johnston County Schools and the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center sponsored a high school and middle school Dropout Prevention 3 on 3 basketball tournament. The tournament was held at The Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center. Other sponsors also included the Workforce Development Board and the Carolina Gladiators.

Community partners who were present included Vocational Rehabilitation, YES I CAN, Inc., Youth Services, Teen Court (student representative Greg Morris), Dropout Prevention (student representative Brandon Bowman), American Red Cross, and the Johnston County Health Department. With food, prizes, music, t-shirts, and awards, all students had a great time.

This event raised awareness about dropout prevention in Johnston County.

Pottery: Handbuilding

Enjoy the experience of working with clay and learn how to construct plates, bowls, tiles, vases and other
forms by using the basic skills of handbuilding instead of the wheel. Learn how slabs, coils, molds, templates,
and pinching can turn into useful and decorative items. With a little imagination, the possibilities are endless!
All skill levels are welcome.

This class will expand upon handbuilding skills learned in a beginner class. Focus will also be placed

Fun With Acrylics

This class is for the beginning artist who may have dabbled in painting before but would like to
explore different techniques or for someone who is interested in learning how easy and fun
painting can be. There will 3 canvases finished in the 4 week session. (If time allows, we may
do more). Techniques taught include brush strokes, use of glaze with acrylics, different tricks for
creating texture and more. Students will need to provide their own canvases, brushes and
paints. Minimum 5 students required for each class.

Creative Sketchbooks

This class is for someone who would like to explore creative “challenges” to create a
sketchbook/journal where they can express their ideas, explore new techniques and
document their feelings and ideas for their own personal use. There will be a brain
overload of ideas and ways to take your inspirations further and make them unique and
inspiring. Participants will provide their own hardback, non spiral bound sketchbook, paints and
other materials (materials list will be provided upon registering). This class will be FUN,
personal, and take your creativity to another level. Beginners and those with some experience
will enjoy this relaxing creative exploration. Minimum 5 students required for each class.

About the Instructor

Instructor Judy Boyette is a professional artist who lives in Johnston County. She is an art educator with
37 years in the school system, the last 25 at Princeton High School. She was the NC
Secondary Art Teacher of the Year in „94/‟95. She studied art at UNC-G, got her Art Ed at UNC-CH and
MED at Campbell University. She paints murals in children’s rooms, churches, etc. and paints canvases
and furniture, too. She is on the board of the Johnston County Arts council, the Friends of the Library
Board, the Pediatric Art Committee at the hospital and a volunteer at
Princeton High School.
